The Unitarian Church of Calgary cultivates a welcoming, caring community. In our religious exploration, we encourage spiritual, intellectual, and ethical growth for all. We speak and act for social and environmental justice. In our shared ministry, we serve each other, Calgary, and the wider world.
We welcome all people, regardless of age, race, nationality, ethnic origin, ability, gender, or sexual orientation.
Sunday, May 11, 10:30 AM: Parenting as Spiritual Practice - Rev. Meg Roberts and Sandy Cooper
Parenting is both a challenge and an incredible joy. How can we approach this important area of life as well as a spiritual practice, offering us both additional patience and life-changing insights? Several parents will share their experiences with us.
We will also include our annual Bridging Ceremony, welcoming those going from youth into young adulthood.
Our choir will join us for the service this morning.
For those not able to join us for the 50th anniversary dinner in November, we want to let you know who was given our two congregational awards.
The Marion and Harold Panabaker Award
This award was given to Christine Michell, an amazing young adult in our congregation, who has provided extraordinary service to our congregational leadership as a youth in our congregation and in the Canadian and continental youth movements. As well, she was a key organizer in the Calgary Five: the five youth from our congregation who facilitated the creation of the 500-foot-long Pride Rainbow Banner and participated in the rally on Parliament Hill the day before equal marriage for gay couples and lesbian couples was made legal in all of Canada through parliamentary vote. The list of her accomplishments runs long, and we wish her continued success. We are proud of you, Chris!
The William Irvine Justice Award
This is a new award given by the congregation to an individual or organization in Calgary outside our congregation who has provided extraordinary service in the cause of social and/or environmental justice. The award is different from the former William Irvine Award. which was given from 1989 – 2004 to church members in recognition of their extraordinary services to our congregation.
The award was given to The Very Reverend Bill Phipps - former moderator of the United Church and a social and environmental activist both locally and nationally. Susan Stratton, who nominated Bill, and Paul Armstrong, a friend of Bill's who received the award due to Bill's absence at the Parkland Institute conference in Edmonton that weekend, spoke of Bill's many accomplishments (including his new book, Cause for Hope: Humanity at the Crossroads, available at many good bookstores, Bill's recommendation being the local bookstore, Pages.) We wish Bill all the best in his continued work on behalf of the earth and those on it who need our compassion, hope, and active work to make our shared values a reality.
Our address is 1703 1st St. N.W., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, T2M 4P4.
